A beautiful sunny afternoon marked the start of the 7's season at Frome RFC. With two teams entered and a host of new faces expectations were high for a cracking day.
The Borgata started well against an impressive Gun 7's team but despite leading at half time went down in the second half as a combination of rustiness and inexperience showed up. The second game against Filton was a slight improvement as a win got things back on track. Having lost earlier in the pool that meant a quarter final against one of the favourites Bryanston Old Boys. There was nothing to choose between the two teams in a cracking match until the final few minutes when Bryanston pulled away to claim the win. At this stage it had proven to be a disappointing day, however with the potential of silverware in the plate the team really up their game and recorded a 26-21 win against the physical Fijian Yorks regiment thanks to a debut hat trick from Conrad Braithwaite. The team then went on to claim the plate final 32 - 20 in an entertaining game against our friends at the Camarthern Warriors. It is a shame a lot of people left early as the team certainly saved the best till last and there is definitely something for coach Baxter to work on for coming events.
The Cugines were also in action in the social competition on Saturday and showed glimpses of potential as the they despatched Walcot and Frome colts in their early group games before going down in their semi to Frome RFC. The young lads involved will look to add some physicality and decision making to their game for later tournaments and with other lads set to bolster their ranks could be a real force this year too.
Next week the Borgata will be at Guildford looking for more silverware.
