This was our second year in the Elite National cup at Bournemouth and expectations were high that we could better last years promising debut and make the an impact in the cup.
Preparation had however not been ideal and with number of missing regulars and a fair smattering of debutants it was always going to be a big ask to hit the ground running. This proved to be the case as a waterlogged and error strewn affair saw us lose out in the early game to a well drilled Bryanston team. The next game against the Wooden Spoon summed up the day as we failed to convert the lions share of possession into points and conceded soft tries. The final game of the day against the Saxons saw a marked improvement as the team at last started to show some form however despite leading well into the second half we again let it slip to go down 17-14.
Sunday saw us in action in the semi final of the plate and again the improvement continued with some fluent 7s and some great solo performances especially from Oscar Ward who scorched the turf all game and Chopper Surry who managed to get his fend going again to maintain his record of always scoring at a tournament!
Despite the results not going our way there were some real positives and the additions of Joe, Oscar, Jackson and Dean have strengthened our ranks and with some regulars to come back coaches baxter and Hughes can look forward to the rest of the season knowing that we just need to improve in small margins to get the campaign back on track.
Congratulations to Oscar Ward who won the Nando's man of the tournament award.
