Robbie Stuart Day 2012 proved to be another resounding success with the CLIC Sargent Godfathers helping Old Bristolians RFC raise over £5,000 for CLIC Sargent.
The fundraising event, held at Old Bristolians Failand ground, is held annually in honour of the much loved former Old Bristolian stalwart and Bristol rugby mascot who lost his brave battle against leukaemia aged 28.
Now in its fourth year the event continues to raise substantial amounts of money and awareness for his chosen charity CLIC Sargent.
On a sunny winters afternoon a large crowd was treated to a feast of rugby. First up the OB’s Barbarians survived a late onslaught by the OBs Vets to win a thoroughly entertaining game 46-37.
The main Exhibition game also provided a thrilling spectacle and amazingly finished up 46-45. Special mentions go to ‘Don’ Ed Mckenzie who scored on debut, and to veteran Godfathers founder Garth Hannaford, whose four second half tries earned him the Man of the Match Champagne presented by Robbie’s father Malcolm Stuart.
The evening event proved to be equally successful for the Godfathers with players selling charity wristbands and Godfathers kit to raise money for the charity. As ever Godfather stash proved to be hugely popular when auctioned with a Godfathers shirt being sold to current shirt sponsor Mason Zimbler for £350 and Godfather gillets raising £125 and £110 respectively. Perhaps most fitting of all was the acquisition of a limited edition pink Godfathers shirt by Malcolm Stuart himself for £150.
With Godfather kit raising over £800 on the night and a Bath shirt and signed Exeter Chiefs ball (provided by former Godfather Charlie Walker-Blair) still to be auctioned it is hoped the money raised to date will continue to soar.
During the evening short talks by Gavin Hooper of CLIC Sargent and Malcolm Stuart further emphasised the fantastic work that CLIC does and the importance of continuing to do all we can to promote and raise money for this very worthy charity.
Robbie Day 2012 was a great start to the coming 7’s season so let’s ensure that we keep the momentum going and raise even more money during the season.
